Kazakhstan acceded to international treaty abolishing the death penalty


Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN Kairat Umarov signed the second optional protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic said. The document was signed at UN headquarters. The ministry noted that the decision to join the international protocol was announced by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev at the general political debate of the 75th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly. Recall that in December 2019, the President of Kazakhstan instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin the procedure for accession to the second optional protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
