Became outdated? Britain is studying the issue of total abandonment of tanks
The British armed forces may completely abandon the use of armored vehicles, the Times reports on August 25. According to the publication, the version of such a decision is being considered as part of proposals for various projects for the modernization of the country's armed forces. The British government may refuse to use armored vehicles due to the regular increase in the cost of modernizing the main Challenger 2 battle tanks and Warrior infantry fighting vehicles (BMP). In 2019, the British military said that the existing tanks and infantry fighting vehicles were outdated and needed another modernization. The British Ministry of Defense believes that in modern wars the importance of armored vehicles is falling, and the role of cybernetic and other advanced technological weapons is growing. According to one of the versions under consideration, significant investments can be redirected to new technologies, up to space, due to the refusal to spend funds on armored vehicles. The publication claims that London has already begun negotiations with NATO partners on revising its military participation in the alliance in case of abandonment of armored vehicles. According to one version, having abandoned tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, Britain can compensate for its presence in the North Atlantic Alliance groups by another 50 attack, reconnaissance and transport helicopters. According to the Times, this issue may be resolved by the middle of autumn this year.
