Kenyan leader announces extension of national curfew
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the national curfew from 21:00 pm to 05:00 am will be extended for another 30 days amid a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus infections in the country. This was reported by the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation with reference to the president's appeal to the nation on Monday, July 27. According to journalists of the publication, the public expected national quarantine was not introduced. The President emphasized that quarantine will not benefit anyone, noting that the responsibility for containing the virus rests with individuals. In his address to the nation, President Kenyatta called on the public to take the pandemic seriously, noting that the police cannot monitor each individual. The harsh reality is that we are at war with an invisible enemy, and in this war there will be no mercy on either side, the president said. We saw mass graves and we saw solitary graves. We saw photos of burials at night. We cannot allow this to be our future in Kenya. 280 Kenyans died, and there will be even more dead. The only question is whether we will come out with a small number of deaths or suffer a disaster, Kenyatta said. President Kenyatta issued several more directives to ministries and districts, including the postponement of the opening date of universities until January 2021, according to journalists. Recall that a surge in coronavirus infections occurred in Kenya after the president's speech on the situation with the COVID-19 on July 6, in which he announced the easing of quarantine measures, including the end of the ban on movement in areas with the greatest spread of the virus in Nairobi, Mandere and Mombase.
